What Are You Feeling Grateful For Right Now?

What are you feeling grateful for right now?

This past weekend I attended my 2nd physical therapy session post-hip surgery.  I was happy to show my therapist the progress I had made and left the session with fatigued muscles from very basic movements such as balancing on one leg, lateral upright band walks, and mini squats to a table holding an 8-pound ball.

But even after all that work on this healing hip, what was most impressive to me was the high spirit of another patient.  This patient was in a wheelchair and seemed to be paralyzed from the waist down.  He was ending his PT session and giving tips to another female patient who was in a very similar situation (in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down).

I heard her tell him that she felt like a live doll sitting at home as she waited for her old insurance to approve physical therapy and that she was so happy to now be with Kaiser Permanente and that her last health insurance sucked.

That statement was so profound to me as I pictured myself sitting on a couch at home not being able to move at all from the waist down, having people wait on me hand and foot.  Not that my husband didn’t help me out immensely for the first few days post-surgery as I wasn’t as mobile and strong. But this visualization was just too real for me as I overheard them chit-chat while I was warming up on the upright bike for 8 minutes.

I AM SO GRATEFUL TO MOVE EVERY LIMB IN MY BODY…even if somewhat restricted right now.

But what was even more amazing was when they both wheeled themselves out of the therapy room, he did a quick spin in his supped-up wheelchair and told this girl with a big smile on his face, “It’s all in the wheelie!” 🙂

She commented back stating that she looked forward to being able to do that one day as well.  It put a smile on my face and actually makes me get a bit wet in the eye right now, as I think back on this moment.

I thank God that I am a healthy 46-year-old wife, mom, grandma, athlete, entrepreneur, coach, educator, and human on this earth!

I truly value every experience I encounter and as I get wiser in my years, these moments have even more profound effects on me.

I know that I am meant to be here to inspire, motivate, and guide others to shatter self-imposed glass ceilings to reach their fullest potential and unprecedented levels of fulfillment.
