How to Get Healthy When Your Spouse Isn’t Supportive

It doesn’t seem fair. You finally made the decision and took the necessary steps to exercise regularly and eat better – but your spouse isn’t supportive.

  •       When you’re trying to make lighter meals, he or she insists on the usual.
  •       When you want to take a walk, your partner wants to pop another beer.
  •       And when you go to the gym, well…you’re on your own.

I get it. That’s tough…I’ve even dealt with this myself.

Here are some tips to help keep you on track.

  1. It’s more common than you think. Ideally, spouses should support each other no matter what, but I’m sorry to say it’s not the case.

2. Build a supportive network elsewhere with a friend, trainer, or work colleague with similar goals.

3. Participate in semi-private/small group training, which is super-helpful for encouragement, accountability, and social support – our members love it at Renov8 Fitness!

4. Communicate. Tell your partner why you’re making these changes and what you need from him or her. Your partner might be nervous about your motivation or where your new path might lead you – or even how to help without wanting to jump on the bandwagon with you.

5. Be patient. Your partner might come around after watching you succeed. Keep talking – and listening.

Ultimately, you’re on this journey for yourself – and you’re worth it, no matter what!

I’d love to support you through your journey. Reach out and let me know how I can support you!
