When setting New Year’s resolutions, people often concentrate on the end result rather than addressing the underlying behaviors that need modification. Imagine aspiring for a firm, toned-up body by building some muscle and losing some body fat (aka body recomposition) without altering dietary or exercise habits – success becomes elusive. Similarly, resolutions demand actionable steps for accomplishment.
The most prevalent New Year’s resolution is “weight loss.” Sustainable success in shedding pounds in 2024 hinges on a daily commitment to behavior change. Those who succeed are the ones actively altering their daily habits. For instance, someone wishing to lose weight after a year of nightly ice cream indulgence and sporadic gym visits will succeed by addressing and modifying those behaviors. Focusing solely on outcomes often leads to failure, as outcomes can be beyond our control. Control lies in behavioral modifications, transforming your approach to New Year’s resolutions.
Additionally, goals fall into three categories: Survival, Success, and Significant. Identifying the category your goal belongs to unveils the driving force behind it. A survival goal aims to escape pain or suffering. So, if your resolution to lose weight stems from a desire to improve poor health, it qualifies as a survival goal. Purchasing your dream car (a conversation I had this past Saturday) can be both a successful and significant goal. These categories form a spectrum, aiding in a comprehensive understanding of the motivation behind your goal. Your ‘why’ becomes the driving force.
